Nearly 30,000 CREDO Activist Speak Out Against Bush/McCain Oil Disaster

Last week, nearly 30,000 CREDO members spoke out against McCain's destructive proposal to reinstate offshore oil drilling. This plan will not bring down gas prices, be destructive to our oceans and the environment and give dirty oil companies more windfall profits. Thanks to our efforts coastal governors are listening.

Next week we will deliver petitions on this crucial issue to 22 governors, but need your help to make a big impact. If you live in a coastal state, click on your state below and sign the petition. Thanks to everyone that has already voiced their opinion on this issue. Your help will ensure that we stop our addiction to oil and come up with real solutions to solve our energy problems while protecting the environment.

55 Miles Per Hour

It has gotten to silly season as Congress prepares to return to their home districts having done nothing about the price of gasoline. There is much to be said about why a barrel of oil has now reached over $140 and the price of a gallon of gasoline (with taxes) is nearing $5.

But rest assured that drilling off the coast of Florida or renewing the solar tax credit will not help. The first is a dumb idea that does not help and the second is a great idea that does not help.

John Grisham, Exxon, and Guns

I have been reading Grisham's latest best seller, The Appeal. It is all about getting the court you want rather than justice.

This point is well illustrated by two of this week's big Supreme Court decisions - yesterday's gift of $2 billion to Exxon and today's decision declaring, for the first time, that the 2nd Amendment gives individuals the right to bear arms. Neither decision would have happened without the changes in the court in recent years. Elections matter and they matter for decades due to court appointments.

"They'll have to shoot me first to take my gun" - Roy Rogers

Washington DC just became a less safe place to be. A ban on handguns has been ruled unconstitutional by the Supreme Court. In a 5-4 decision, the justices upheld a lower court ruling striking down the ban, stating that individuals had a right to keep handguns for lawful purposes.

The DC city council contested that the ban was needed to help keep violence and murder rates down. But the measure was challenged by a security guard, Dick Heller. He argued that if he was allowed to have a handgun at work, he also had a constitutional right to have one at home.

The ruling is expected to have far reaching effects on gun laws across the US.
Working Assets/CREDO has long supported the work of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, one of the groups featured on our 2008 donations ballot. In a statement Paul Helmke, Executive Director, reiterates "Our fight to enact sensible gun laws will be undiminished by the Supreme Court's decision in the Heller case." Read his full statement here.

The last word goes to Eddie Izzard, British comedian:

"And the National Rifle Association says that, "Guns don't kill people, people do," but I think the gun helps, you know? I think it helps. I just think just standing there going, "Bang!" That's not going to kill too many people, is it? You'd have to be really dodgy on the heart to have that..."

Save Our Coasts. Stop McCain oil distaster.

I have been really angry at McCain/Bush for their proposal end the moratorium on offshore oil drilling. Yet, I was happy to read in the LA Times today that residents from Santa Barbara were really going after McCain for his position. In fact, yesterday he was on an environmental panel with Governor Schwarzenegger in Santa Barbara and local leaders on the panel told him why his plan wouldn't help consumers at the pump. Even worse many Santa Barbara residents can speak first-hand about the horrific impacts of oil spills. In 1969, a Santa Barbara spill emptied 3 million gallons of crude into the ocean and killed thousands of birds. As a former Santa Barbara resident, I use to see the oil rigs daily and saw with my own eyes the real impact these rigs have on the environment.

McCain's plan would be a disaster for the environment, a boon for the oil companies, and won't have any affect whatsoever on gas prices. We need real energy policies that protect the environment and consumers. Governor Schwarzenegger has stood strong saying no drilling off California coasts, but he needs to know Californians support him. Nearly 6,000 CREDO members have signed our petition to Governor Schwarzenegger to stop any plan for offshore oil drilling. Join us and say no to McCain's oil disaster. Click here to sign the petition.

Shocking News: Corporate Lobbying Pays Off

Regular readers of Roll Call and The Hill already know that corporations spend far more (probably 20 times more) on lobbying than on political contributions. And there is lots of anecdotal evidence that the right lobbyist can deliver corporate benefits worth tens, if not hundreds of times, their fee, in terms of taxes eliminated or public property swapped or no bid (no work!) contracts obtained. This fact is why the number of lobbyists has exploded, the number of earmarks in the budget massively larger, and why a handful of lobbyists and congressional aides are going to prison.

Big Sugar Swallows Bitter Pill. Charlie Crist Saves Nation's Teeth.

Amid the talk of offshore oil drilling by the current administration, at least one Republican has proved mindful of damage to the environment, and taken action. Florida Governor Charlie Crist announced yesterday that the natural flow of the Everglades will be restored through the purchase of U.S. Sugar holdings south of Lake Okeechobee, a move which has been called the largest step forward in the long history of Everglades restoration.

Earth Justice is public interest law firm whose mission is to enforce environmental laws and is a group featured on Working Assets/CREDO's 2008 ballot. Today they hail "a historic moment in Everglades restoration" calling it a "stunning development" and applauding Charlie Crist for his bold leadership (full story here).

Crist has been cited as a possible running mate for John McCain, a recent convert to offshore drilling. Their conversations on preserving the environment should be lively.

This morning, Morgan Tsvangiri, the opposition presidential candidate in Zimbabwe, sought refuge in the Dutch embassy after a police raid on his party's political headquarters. Yesterday, he announced that his party would not participate in the presidential runoff election scheduled for June 27th as state sponsored murders, arrests of trade union members, and other forms of election intimidation escalated. In a truly Kafka-esque situation, hundreds of international election observers roamed the capital.

California Public Utilties Commission Heard from CREDO Members

Last night, Kate Stayman-London (newest member of the CREDO political team) and I attended an Oakland public hearing of the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC). THE CPUC is holding public hearing across the state on a proposal the utilities filed back in December to let big business out of paying their fair share for social programs like the California Alternative Rates for Energy (CARE). Our friends at the Utility Reform Network (TURN) have been leading the charge to stop this corporate giveaway and had many speakers at last night's hearing.

I was able to deliver your views in person. I was the second public speaker and read the text of the petition that over 8,300 CREDO members signed online. Thanks to your efforts the CPUC knows that consumers from across the state oppose this destructive proposal. The CPUC will start hearing testimony from industry experts in July and make a decision on the proposal in August. If you are CREDO customer, you can call President Michael Peevey for free at 415.703.3703 and tell him not to allow the utilities to shift $100 million in increases onto residential customers' bills while discounting rates for big businesses.

Capitulation is Ugly

Well, the Republicans are crowing that they got more than even the White House imagined they could get! In a 293-129 vote today, the House voted in favor of new wiretapping legislation that expands the President's ability to listen in on conversation and will soon lead to the dismissal of dozens of privacy suits against telecommunications giants. This capitulation was unnecessary and reveals the bizarre political calculations that lead someone to conclude that giving in to the least popular president in history and some of the least popular companies is a thoughtful thing to do.

Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, the prime architect of the capitulation, had announced months ago that no reform would pass unless the White House got its telecom immunity. If you are interested, check out over at the Federal Election Commission's website, whether any telecom PACs have given money to Mr. Hoyer.

Agency? Agency? What Agency?

Who said we were an agency? We might be ... but wait, we're not. - Office of Administration

Let's help them out. According to Merriam Webster an agency is :

1 a: the office or function of an agent b: the relationship between a principal and that person's agent
2: the capacity, condition, or state of acting or of exerting power : operation
3: a person or thing through which power is exerted or an end is achieved : (instrumentality communicated through the agency of the ambassador)
4: an establishment engaged in doing business for another (an advertising agency)
5: an administrative division (as of a government - the agency for consumer protection)

"It's number 5! I'll open the box and claim the prize!". Wrong. After deciding they were an agency and subject to the Freedom of Information Act, the OA changed their minds after Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington filed a request for records regarding missing White House e-mails, and this decision was upheld by the court earlier this week (full story here).

OA has admitted that it functioned as an agency and processed FOIA requests until August 2007. Although CREW filed its FOIA request in April 2007 - four months before OA changed its position - the court found that OA had no duty to respond to CREW's FOIA request because OA was never an agency in the first place.

Yet more dissemblance from George Bush & Co. Groups like CREW, one of Working Assets 2008 ballot recipients (more here), are invaluable in highlighting their continuing shadowy moves.

House Leaders Protect Bush's White House

There are numerous reports that the House leadership has reached agreement with the Bush White House and the Senate to pass legislation that effectively provides retroactive immunity to telecom companies that participated in the warrantless wiretapping program that is thought to have gone well beyond what was legal. According to press reports, the deal will allow the companies to escape from pending lawsuits so long as they convince a Federal judge that the White House asked them to cooperate. The test will not be whether it was legal to participate, so this appears to be setting the bar so that the judge will simply rule in favor of the deal.
